i got a free domain name under a local web host package, but wish to terminate my contract with the web host. i want to get back my domain name but it is under them since its free.

i have to pay $20 to get it back, but not sure how to go about it.
do i need to get a new webhost to transfer it, i want my site data to be intact, including the osCommerce i painstakingly configure for days.

so what do i do first? get a new webhost, pay the cash and get my domain name and transfer it? or get my domain name back first? u noe this kind of unreliable companies...i am afraid they refuse to hand back my domain name. den i would have wasted more money to sign up a new webhost and end up wif 2 accounts.

pls help, my site has been down for 4 days and its the 2nd time this happened. best part is i have been with them for less than 3 weeks! can u imagine 1 year? the webhost has a history of being attacked because they refused to pay any money to secure their servers. no refunds from them too which, according to their policy, they ought to. shall not whine any further, pls suggest my best route to take now.

get domain immediately and then just get hosting. Never rely on free things, there is no such thing

Well if it is registered under your web host name, they may not release it to you. There is no such thing as free, they basically use that carrot to dangle infront of you so that you be hooked to sign up and once you do, you be trap with them. Some may 'sell' you back your domain name if you buy them an obscene amount of money, some would not allow you to do so.

The only path you can take is to just start from afresh and learn from your mistake. Never never never never never take up a free deal or anything which seems to good to be true. Always read the terms and conditions before signing up.

i guess i can start afresh and restart my link buildings again. and i had to edit a tons of pages that had my domain name (website name) in it.

dunno if this is the right place to ask this: is it possible to claim back a full or at least partial refund of the subscription fees that i will never use again? the policy says 7 days money back, but i am only with them for less than 3 weeks. i will ask them first, and den seek help from the consumer association. wats ur take on this case? will i haf a high chance?

sure, the policy says 7 days, but it also says 99.5% uptime, i am getting an obscene 80% at MOST. there are times when i didn't check and forum members claim the images my site host (which i post on the forum) didn't load. so i am sure the time is longer. it also says compensation when downtime, which they refused me w/o valid reasons (saying they were new and still learning). they are going against their policy to their own advantages, is it even legal for them to do this sort of things?

Well, 3 weeks is 21 days which is beyond the 7 days money back guarantee so I assume the other would typically be No. Most web host do not offer refunds, full or partial, unless it is clearly started.

I made the mistake in the past of paying 1 year upfront then realizing that after 4 months, the web host service went down the drain and I left them without being able to claim anything back since the contract did say that they do not offer refunds.

Well, you can bring a legal suit against them but in reality, you need to find out if the thousands of dollars and the time you going to spend in the courts is worth the money you paid for the hosting.

You have to request to unlock the domain name you host with your current web hosting provider, if they allow to do so.

If they allow you to unlock the domain name, then you can transfer your domain to a new domain provider such as namecheap or godaddy with a authentication code provided when the domain are being requested for a transfer.

For me, i am hosted my domain with ixwebhosting, and in the control panel i can actually hit the domain unlock button and transfer my domain to any other provider i wish.

My domain also came with the web host package but i have the advantage to transfer the domain anytime i want, if i decided to cancel the web hosting account with them, and i think this should be the professional web host provider do.

For your case, your web host provider a bit cursing.
