hey guys ok heres the scoop,

    i have a 400 GB HD and i have 2 partitions.

    1 is C drive

    2 is F drive

now all of my sites , files ,scripts etc are on the F drive. now i cant lose this info no matter what. so heres my Q. can i reformat the C drive that holds my windows and start over while keeping my files on the F drive?

you should be able to format a single partition....however, I would recommend rather than doing that and potentially losing your data, go buy a cheap 20 or 30 gig HDD and just put your OS on it....

i'm about to do the same thing too. i want to reformat my C partition because my laptop is running reaaaaaaaally slow now.

can it be done? yes. just be sure that you format the CORRECT partition. DON'T BE LIKE ME 3 YEARS AGO. check double check X-check as many times before formatting.

Back up the data. Then triple check to make sure you are doing the correct partition. Then go for it.

no don't use FDISK! are you using windows or mac? if you're using windows, use the format option in the installation itself. wrong command in fdisk and you're a goner. :)

Yes you can format one partition at a time.

I always backup my data, because you could have a power surge/failure when your formatting and boof there goes your data/drive. DVDs are not that expensive so there is no reason why use should risk not backing up your data.

    On a side note

200 GB is quite a big partition for the OS.

You are better off using a 50 GB partition for the OS and create another partition to store your data.

Why not purchase a removable hard disk and backup all the important files as well? Note that hard disk may crash. Adviseable to make a copy of those important files.

Alternative option is you might consider purchase another hard disk ( same space ) and try converting your pc as "virtual server". You don't have to worry regarding data lost in case one hard disk crash.

Out of all the replies, I agree with Zinruss. Buy another hard disk and convert your pc as VIRTUAL SERVER. You will be safe. better safe than sorry.

why don't you backup your data on cd and dvd. i always do that.
and if you format you c, than all the data on another drive will be as it is. don't worry about it. if there is anything installed in c, it will be deleted.

don't delete any partition, just simply format "c" and every thing will be all right!
    cheers.:)

I have a drive going bad and when I try to clone it, the clone never works....

Monday I tried again and the clone said that the drive was going bad and should be backed up immediately - this is the new drive.

Put back the original and I couldn't boot windows all the way so I had to do a recovery - still trying to get things to all work - quickbooks won't work no matter how many times I have unistalled and reinstalled it!!!

Anyone have luck cloning a drive? I used norton ghost before and it didn't do anything it was suppose to then.
