Need to pick a CMS for my first paid gig

I've been doing my own sites for years. My golf blog is one of the most popular golf blogs out there (using wordpress).

So a client of mine is hiring me to do a site for his soccer team. This is the first site someone is paying me to do. He wants to have a main page with random news and photos on it. Then have sub pages for photo galleries, news, player bios and team schedules & results.

I've built several phpBB plus 1.5 sites and could do it with that. I could also use wordpress to do most of this.

But I'm considering doing some "learning" on Mambo or some other CMS. Given the requirements listed above, should I give Mambo or a shot or what do you suggest?

I just started using mambo a few months ago, I like it alot, - its very good if you want others (without design skills) to maintain the content and you can get it ranking well.

Put your site in your signature ;)

Yes, I do want to give my client some kind of limited admin permission to add his own news, pictures and comments...

I have 3 of my sites in my sig but they're not showing up...

    NEVERMIND....got it.

Mambo is pretty straightforward, upload, configure, use.. pretty much.
there is also a hack called 'sef advanced'- its 40 euros or something and makes all the urls keyword friendly too.
Also, use keywords to link to your sites (in your sig) ;)

Yep, can def say Mambo does the trick. Dead easy to work on, loads of mods available, some free, some about the 30-40 dollar mark, but very very customisable. Have just developed a site using Mambo, will eventually show on www.bloomsburyflowers.co.uk, but client now adding their content before switching over. One pointer with Mambo though which had me scratching my head for a couple of minutes - the Save and Cancel and Edit type links are all in the header. Most annoying changing all your content then not having a clue how to save it, so if it saves you a couple of moments confusion......

I haven't written code since the demise of the mainframe and was able to get a Mambo site up and running in no time. There are two non-technical publishers that add content to the site and once they became familiar with the admin UI it was easy.

It's the only CMS I've used so I have nothing to compare it to but I've been very pleased with Mambo.

P.S. Put your keywords in your signature URLs ;)

As I just mentioned in another thread, both Geeklog and Xoops have a very short learning curve. I would say mastering them in a few hours is about the same level as being an intermidiate Word user.

    Good Luck

Well I went with mambo. I was sorry at first because it just doesn't work like other systems I've used. But after some time, I've gotten the hang of it and I do like it now.
