    Thats a question alot of people want answering here :p

    However, what works for one person may not work for another. This is why you should go research trends etc and get in them while they are hot ;)

    Trial & Error is a good one here ;)

    Once you are making money, hosting / disk space shouldn't be a problem. Don't let that limit you.

    Rarely does anything original ever come out of building a website with the only goal in mind "to make money."

    I prefer to make projects for the purpose of generating something original, or something that is needed rather than just making more work for myself and cluttering yet another marketplace.

    Your time would be better invested in improving what you already have instead of looking to put more on your plate.

    Basically don't think of how to make money from the site... although if you want an easy way to make money for your site, you can PM me and I will provide details free of charge... no list signups or anything...

    Anywho... like I was saying... Don't think of how to make money from the site. Think of what you love to do in your spare time. Is it marketable? Does it have high search volume on any of the keywords related to it? Think of what you are passionate about. Is it politics? Religion? Mud Wrestling?

    Whatever the case may be you just need to pick something you are very knowledgeable about. If you do that, then it will be easy to create content based on that idea or passion because you have so much knowledge about the subject.

    If you don't care about being passionate about your niche, then you want to use keyword tools to determine what is hot. Also use clickbank.com and other similar sites to determine what people are trying to promote and what people are actually buying. In addition to using keyword tools like google's keyword and wordtracker.com and spyfu.com, etc. you will also want to keep an eye on google, yahoo, and msn's top 5 searches listed on their respective home pages. You can then optimize your site for those keywords daily to pull traffic from those searches. The top 5 in google. If you optimized one site with all of those keywords, then that is a lot of people looking for that topic. Do a site with all of the 3 sites lists combined and then you really will drive traffic.

    Watch the forums on your topics of interest as well, because you may choose a very huge topic that includes several niches already that are already being exploited. So what you want to do is check out what are on these forums, because people will tell you exactly what they want to know about.

    For example if you are on a cooking forum you may have over 10 or 15 people wanting to know how to bake the perfect cake... That is a small amount of people but if there are only 100 active members on that forum that is 15%. Now if people are searching at that same percentage on google, yahoo, and msn, then you could be looking at several thousand searches daily for that niche.

    Nice trick is to just use google, msn, and yahoo and start searching. If you find few ads on a particular search, then that is definitely a niche worth looking into, because you could get cheap adwords ads to drive traffic to that site... because if you have only 3 ads with 3 other slots available you could bid really low and still end up on the first page with adwords ad.

    Hope that helps.

    JPP said it well. Don't plan to make a site to make money. Plan to make a site you love, and then use it for money. Otherwise it won't last. You'll get bored. Trust me.

    Yeah, try finding a niche from your hobbies instead of something you know nothing much about.

    This is very true. What if you collect stamps? baseball cards? coins? or like my father used to collect and my mother... they collected like the blue colored glass bowls and stuff... I don't know what it was called, but it had some odd name for it. Come to think of it... maybe I should keep that niche to myself... :D

    Just browse a flea market or the internet version of that... eBay and you will find all kinds of niches.

    You can only make money in a niche where people spend money. Ideally they want to spend money right now. Look for the following criteria when piking a niche:

    * passionate people
    * desperate people
    * people with an urgent problem

    Examples: Pet owners (passionate), all kinds of hobbies (passion), money problems (desperate), pain (urgency) etc.

    If the site isn't about something you are interested in or knowledgeable about, you won't be able to make any money from it even if it is in a money making niche. Quality content trumps all.
