Need to buy a Dedicated Server - Please Help

    Hey all.

I have decided that I need a dedicated server mainly because it seems you can’t make much money reselling hosting unless you have unlimited (or very high) bandwidth per month and can oversell hosting, in WHM/cPanel for example be able to over allocate the resources that you have.
Also I want to do more than just web hosting so I think a dedicated is the way to go.
I have done lots of research and it mostly ends up in me being confused.
Anyway I think it’s between FDC and OVH. Here is a rundown of both:

Firstly the ones I am comparing both have the following:
    • CPU: Core 2 Duo 6550 – 2 cores @ 2.33Ghz with 4MB Cache and 1333Mhz FSB
    • 100Mbps connection with unlimited traffic (bandwidth) per month (approx 32TB of traffic)
    • 5 IP addresses
    • No setup fee
    • WHM/cPanel

    FDC - Dedi Serv 3 - 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #3
2GB RAM, 400GB HDD, Location USA
    Price: $200 per month

    OVH - Superplan 2008 - Superplan 2008 Dedicated
4GB RAM, 750GB HDD, Location France
    Price: $170 per month ($140 + $30/pm for WHM/cPanel license)

So is OVH the clear winner with because it has double the RAM and more HDD space of FDC’s server and because its cheaper/pm? I could pay a one off fee with FDC of $198 and get another 2GB RAM and $49 for another 300GB of HDD.
At some point I will want to host websites that I don’t want a USA server (torrent site for example) but I could just get hosting in Europe when I am ready for that. I have looked at dedicated servers in the Netherlands (Europe) but the bandwidth is limited.
Can anyone here offer better? I wouldn’t of though so?
So any input from anyone? Suggestions? I have herd good things about FDC and im sure I will not have any problems with them.

    Thanks
    Leviathan

I would say the keys here are cost and quality. Why would one service have such lower prices? Is it just because of location or are there other cost factors that might affect the quality of service?

I think you need to call OVH and get a feel for the company; ask technical question to see if they really know what they are doing, before you shell out cash.

Like another user said, I'd call OVH and get a feel for the company. Personally though, I'd go for the USA based FDC. I haven't had direct experience with either of these companies, but I've heard of FDC. Where are you located? If you're located in the US, I would choose a US server. That's just me, and that's what I would do.

I would not limit yourself to just one provider. Be sure to take a look at the Dedicated Server Providers here at DP as well. We've been around for over 11 years now and host and build all our own servers. We have several comparable and affordable options available here: http://hostinglizard.com/dedicatedservers.php

If you have any questions or would like to order, please feel free to let me know. Thank you and good luck.

Why not start with a VPS, so you can get a feel for the market?

One thing to mention about FDC, is the unmetered ports are shared between multiple servers, so you have to be careful as to how much throughput you're actually getting for your money.

You can get a Dual Core Operton (2 x 2.4Ghz), 4GB Ram, 2 x 250GB Sata II, etc., for $179 a month - so there are good deals to be had. That's a SoftLayer server, by the way.

Personally I wouldn't recommend going with FDC, they are on cheap bandwidth and isn't all that reliable if you want to be providing good hosting to your clients.

i would take a ovh any day, ovh you easily get 12MB upload vs FDC which is way oversold. If you can get OVH i would grab it. The plan you have is only 59 Eur (~100$) however dont expect excelent support

Well, if you want true quality, i would go with a scsi server(scsi drives are more than twice as fast as sata). Your can read about the performance of different raid configs here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=956124 I would definitely go with AT LEAST a raid1 setup, as sata drives fail quite often, and you dont want to be liable for lost data. Preferably, you should go with either a sata raid10 setup, or a scsi raid1 setup(about equal in speed, scsi raid1 is slightly faster, and less likely to fail). We can offer you a:

    • dual 3.2ghz xeons
    • 4gb ECC ram
    • 2x 146GB 15,000RPM scsi drives
    • hardware raid1 256MB cache
    • geniune HP

    For only $200/mo

If the decision is not made I would recommend do not skip glowhost.com dedicated servers . The level of the management and the quality are very high.
