I read here , there and every where that directories are quickly being "offed" by google, and in the very near future google will not recognize a directory. Does any one have the straight scoop on this? I am of course referring to good directories, not links farms or any other form of bad marketing. Use dmoz as the good example wink I have a project in the makings and am not going to work uncountable hours on it if this rumor is true eek
Google will always recognise good directories IMO, like DMOZ etc. They are wanting rid of the crappy spammy ones...
It's the link farms that Google are targeting. Such sites just trade links, swap them, collect them or charge fees to list and not promote them. Junk, cheap sites basically, nothing good for the user.
Google treats web directories almost the same as any other site. If they offer quality content and are a useful resource they don't suffer any penalties and are well indexed by Google. If Google considers them spam or simply selling links then they get hit by a penalty or a PR demotion.
they Will always recognize good directories, but maybe in the future they might put less weight on it then other links, but no one will know for sure. I believe this is happening right now, six months ago I was on the first page of Google and 90% of my links were directories, but I'm no longer on the first page of Google, either they're devaluing some directories which brought my rank down or maybe it was something else.
