Start with the OS. Which one are you planning to put in place? The software - do you need Hardware Acceleration? Etc.

Then move to the processor - which one are you planning on using?

It's impossible to make a suggestion without knowing your budget and what you plan to use the PC for.

We could bat this back and forth forever. It's up to you what OS you go for? Windows 7? Windows XP? Actually, come to think of it, someone posted a link to Microsoft (applies to Asia only I believe) for WindowsXP for free.

That determines where you go - cost out the OS.

As I said, we can bat this back and forwards forever. Unless you actually work out what it is you want before you do anything, you are likely to leave something out.

So, now we have established your OS is likely to be Windows 7, are you going to be running it in XP Mode so you can run your existing WinXP programs? If you are, have you checked your existing software will run on Windows 7? Also, you are going to require hardware acceleration (you will if running xp mode) - while most of the new stuff coming out (motherboards, etc.) support it, some of the slightly older stuff won't.

    i would suggest
    i5 760 - processor
    dh55tc - motherboard
    4 gb ddr3 ram
    500 gb hdd
4350 ati radeon 1 gb ddr display card etc etc.
this will be a good configuration and will be somewhat cheaper.
