I would recommend new Acer AspireOne netbook, I believe it will cost $450++, comes with 10 inch display, 2gb ram (optional) and 120gb harddisk. Unfortunately, there is no optical drive, you can buy an external one separately. I suppose this is the first 3G netbook.

As an owner of a laptop myself, I'd get as many memory as possible on my next laptop.

Have a look at the ASUS Eee PC 1000*/1002*/whatever.
They only have 1GB ram standard, but you can easily add more.

I've got an Eee PC 901 - and couldn't be happier with it :)

Here's the Eee PC comparison chart

If you are looking for a netbook then the 10" Asus eeePC 1000H is the top rated product in most of the recent netbook reviews. It comes with a 160GB HDD and 1GB RAM which can be easily upgraded up to 2GB. Battery life with a 6 Cell Battery and Windows XP is 4-5 Hours.

I'm going to agree with the others. The Asus Eee 1000s are the way to go. I have one and I love it. I can't think of a single complaint. They are currently selling on Amazon for less than $350 plus you can upgrade the ram to 2gb for around $26.

Macbook and MSI are good ones. If money is not an issue, buy a Macbook and you'll most probably never worry about viruses, overheating and hanging problems. If macbooks is not an option, then go for MSI, they are known for quality motherboards and small compact designs. :D
