You can use any of your choice.
But I can suggest you to use Seagate external hard drive. :)

There are a lot of good one's out there. I am using Western Digital and it works smoothly and the rate of copying stuffs or rate of writing data is also pretty good.

Buy on price, and get two of them - one to keep at your home, and one to keep at your girlfriend's/parent's/office.
Any of the big names are fine. I have a personal vendetta against Western Digital, so I always buy Seagate drives. But that's just me :)

I have purchased 3 of the Freecom 1TB drives and am very pleased with them.

Western Digital Passport 500GB. Not too expensive and should store a significant amount (depending).

My personal suggestion would be to have a Samsung Internal SATA and then get an external casing for that. That way, you will get best of the both worlds. Seagates used to be best but with the recent series, they have downgraded their quality. In fact, we have seen a large spike of the Seagate drives gone bad - sometimes upto 100 drives per month!
