Write unique content and wait for others to read it and love it so much that they to link to you.

You need the basics dude. Go out there and google out search engine optimization skills and read up on those articles. Also, you can spend your money on the famous SEO book to get basic and advanced understanding of what SEO is all about.

if you are having hard time understanding SEO, then i suggest you read some good SEO book. a well known one is Aaron Wall's SEO book. there are lot others but you can get some free resources googling the term SEO or search engine optimization. read a lot and you will get better over time. spending some time reading will take you way ahead than where you could be trying to do it by yourself using trial and error

Back in the day when I answer questions as a researcher for Google I wrote a lot about the basics, here are a few of those answers, which might catch you up.

    How Does Page Rank Work
    http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=141243

    and others...

    https://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=57819

    https://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=90289

    http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=59477

    http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=60507

Something to keep in mind is that these answers are a few years old now. I went over them before posting this and didn't see anything that was taboo or "wrong" now, though there are several other tactics to make use of which back in those days didn't exist.

One of them, which to me is at the top of the list, is getting and registering the Google XML sitemap. I'm sure you have heard the term "site map" before, but this is a XML file which lists all of the pages on your web site, which you then feed to Google, thus indexing your web site yourself.

This has proven to be very effective for web sites I've helped out on and you can find out more about it and how to create and install one on this web site here:
    https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html

While all of this is based on the Google Search Engine, normally if you get it right there, then the others tend to fall in line as well (although MSN has been doing very strange stuff lately, to the point that they aren't even useful to searching clients any longer.. hmmm).

Well, good luck and Happy New Year.

I just did that one manually and found it, but do a search for SEODigger...it will show keyword rankings for any particular URL. Maybe someone has a link to the free tool.

This one works too, but you have to pick the keywords and see if you rank...
