Need some urgent help and advice!

My site has been ranking in top 10 for the last 4 months. The keywords that I rank on are highly competitive but we have there for a few months now, earning rewards ranking high on mother Google.

Yesterday though, my site went from #5 to #71. I have seen fluctuations but my site used to fluctuate to #12 or #14 but now I am way down the order on page number 7.

I have not added any new content for the last 2 weeks and I have been working on getting backlinks. I got a few sitewide links on different sites recently and it had a very nice effect on my ranking but now all of a sudden it has dropped so much.

What should I do? Obviously I am loosing out on a large sum of cash and you know that nobody likes that. Your suggestions/comments/opinions and advice is HIGHLY needed and would be highly appreciated! I really want to get back on page 1 as soon as possible.

    Thank you for your time!

My initial guess is that the sitewide links have drawn a penalty. I have seen it happen before. I got a couple good sitewide links and the site moved up in the rankings for a highly competitive term. Shortly after, Google dropped it to the mid 50s.

    1. When did the rankings drop? They may return.
    2. What new onsite/offsite work have you done the last 3-4 weeks?
    3. How old is the site?
    4. Where the new backlinks PAID?

It's always hard to say without knowing the URL, KWs and some empirical data on a site.....

Web Gezelle: Do you propose I should take them down? Or should I get more normal links?

    1 - This morning
2 - Onsite: Nothing! I haven't added anything for the last 2 weeks. Offsite: Got some more links. A couple are sitewide mostly they are related to my site.
    3 - Around 1.6 years
4 - No, I am yet to buy a link. I have never done that. I was thinking to start buying links but so far, no link pointing to my is a paid link. I have worked hard on linkbuilding.

What is your take on this now? I am still #71

Most of the time site wide links are paid links and I know Google has been cracking down on paid links that they consider to be used to artificially inflate page rank. If you paid for them then you might have thrown away your money. If you didn't pay for them you might want to try to change them to only be from one or two pages and not site wide.
