Hello, I have a forum website(invision board) and need some inputs to select a dedicated server. My forum has 8 million posts (Including posts and topics) in total. Right now i am using Xeon 5260 2 bay chaisis 32 gb ram 400 gb SD I just want to know how can we determine the server configuration ..based on what factors? Current issues i am facing is database table crashes.... Any info on hostingsource.com , arvixe.com , kvchosting.net server hosting? Alternatives ? Reviews ? Thanks
What is the operating system? is it mysql or mariadb? because the configuration file may be located at different locations. You might want to have your database hosted on another server which is optimized for it like at https://www.digitalocean.com/products/managed-databases-mysql/
I would stay away from arvixe.com and other companies owned by EIG group as you will have a very poor experience. The first things you need to consider are how much CPU, memory, and disk IO are being used. The Xeon 5260 is a very old server so I am guessing your database is having SQL lock ups due to the very slow disk IO. Simply upgrading to a newer Intel E-2236 would increase your performance by 15x-16x as much: Intel Xeon X5260 Benchmark: 1203 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+X5260+@+3.33GHz&id=1292 Intel Xeon E-2236: 14333 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E-2236+@+3.40GHz&id=3607 Not to mention the use of SSD or NVMe storage that come default with most servers these days, would further increase your forums performance. So the bottom line here is that you should upgrade to a newer server, it will perform much better than the ancient server you are on now.
Better to upgrade you current plan with your existing provider. You have good potential and I believe most hosting providers want to have you as client. Contact your current provider and find out what they can do for you.
Just upgrading of server hardware may not fulfil your requirements. Its look like you may needed to tune-up your current server. you may follow the bellow plan. If you are using Apache you may shift Nginx or LightSpeed with Cache setup. If you are not using RAID you may need to shift SSD Raid Setup. If you are using MySQL you can Shift to MariaDB. If you can afford you can shift to use Cloud Database. You can use AWS, Alibaba cloud or Google cloud for this. You may also shift to separate database server of your own.

When choosing a dedicated server, you'll want to make sure that it has the features that you need. Some key features to look for include: 1. A powerful CPU and plenty of RAM. This will ensure that your server can handle the load of your websites and applications. 2. Plenty of storage space. This will allow you to store your files and data on the server. 3. A good network connection. This will ensure that your website loads quickly for your visitors. 4. Excellent support. The best dedicated servers come with excellent customer support, so you can get help if you need it.
You are using an old and weak CPU inside the server, and totally it is better to upgrade all of the hardware resources. It seems that you need a network port with high bandwidth speed in addition to high-performance hardware resources. First of all, we suggest you monitor the performance of current hardware resources. Then check the benchmark of hardware (CPU, RAM, SSD) from reputable sites. Now you will be able to decide about choosing the hardware of your server. Normally you need a CPU with better performance; besides, you will need RAMs with good volumes and frequencies. Strongly we recommend you to use NVMe storage or RAID enterprise SSDs. Due to the high number of online users on your server, we recommend using the 10Gbps network ports or bonded network ports.
