What is "Avg. position" in the Search queries section of Google webmaster tools. It is in point like 2.3, 6.3 and so on.
Google will display your website at different positions based on a number of things. (User history being the most influential.) The "average position" is where your website usually appears for a term.
Avg. position is nothing but a search result position of your website/pages in the google search. Google webmaster tools shows the Avg. because the position may be vary from country to country for example your site will be in the 4th position for a query in Google.com and the same site will be in the 6th position for a query in Google.ca (it depends on the geo targeting etc). So, GWT shows the avg. positioning of your site.
It's an average of your SERP. Sometimes you may rank #4 and sometimes you rank #5. If the time spent at each position is equal your rank will be 4.5.
Is this showing on particular keyword? I wonder how to analyze this if the site is experiencing high fluctuation rate from different serp pages.
Avg position is the average of the position for a specific keyword, like your keyword was on 3rd position on first day then it moved to 2 spot next day then it again came back at 3rd spot third day here your average rank will be (3+2+3)/3= 2.6 That is why you often saw it as a fraction number.
