Need some help with home server setup

I am looking to setup a home webserver. I have already installed Ubuntu on a system but I am having connection issues on my local network but in order to be able to add all the packages I want I need to get access to the net which I am currently having issues with. I am actually looking to setup a system according to this how-to http://howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu8.04-lts

I'm willing to reward someone for their time in helping me resolve this issue. I am stuck on setting up my server's IP address and mask. If you can help pm me with any info or questions and I'll make sure to send you as much info as I can to help troubleshoot. Thanks

to set up your ip address
    ifconfig eth0 up
    ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0
    route add default gw 192.168.1.1

it is either eth0 or eth1
default gw is the address of the router

if your prefer getting ip address from DHCP
    ifconfig eth0 up
    dhclient eth0

Thanks for the info. I tried setting up with dhcp but I just keep getting no access.

The server tried listening for an ip address from the dhcp server on my router but all I got was "No DHCPOffers received" and "No working leases in persistent database -sleeping"

Is there a configuration I might be missing on my router or something to make this work?

Sounds like there is a problem with the DHCP server, or a physical problem with your cabling. Do you have a link light on the back of your network card (indicating that your cable is good)? If that checks out okay, you will either have to diagnose the problem on your router, or just set a static address.

If you truly intend to use the machine as a "server" at your house, then a static address is more fitting. I would just skip to that and forget worrying about the DHCP problem.

I was trying dhcp as a last result really since I couldn't get the server to connect with a static IP either. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with setting the static IP so I figured dhcp could handle it for me just so I could try and get the server online and updated. Really can't tell what could be the problem since I have tried both and I still get issues trying to connect. When I set the server with a static IP address I tried pinging a computer on the network as well as the routers IP and I got no results. It seems like the server is still not connected. The cables are good they do have green lights and I double checked by testing them with computers and they were able to connect to the network. Any other thoughts?

Sounds like you have everything pretty much correct...

Are there multiple ethernet interfaces on the machine, and possibly the cable is plugged into the wrong one? Sometimes they are not assigned in order. If you have ethtool installed, you can run "ethtool eth0" to make sure that the line "Link detected: yes" shows up, then you know that you are plugged into the correct cable.

to diagnose further, will need more info. Can you please re-setup the machine with a static ip address as listed above, and then post the results of:

    "ifconfig -a"
    and
    "ethtool eth0"
    and
    "route -n"

From that, we should be able to pretty much see what's going on.

not sure what I should be looking for. should I type everything out that I see or is there something in specific that I should look for and report back?

I ran ethtool eth0 and I did get "Link detected: yes"
