Hi, I have a site which I am thinking of using MOD REWRITE to change the URL to more SEO friendly one. At the moment for product pages, the URL is something like www.domain.com/shop.php?item=766 and I am thinking of changing it to something like www.domain.com/t-shirts/nice_t-shirt.html where t-shirt is the category and nice_t-shirt is the product name. I am concerned about duplicate data, especially with Google adding everything to supplement index these days. The page will be the same as the current one but the URL different, how should I do this so Google doesnt think its a new page with exactly the same data? I hope, I have put this across clearly and would appreciate any help with this. Matt
Check this one out on how to safely use the mod rewrite: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=23044&highlight=rewrite+seo
Right when you make the site and arn't indexed is the best time to do it. It can take a while before Google updates the listings!
Oh so how about cases like when the domain is already indexed and we'd like to modrewrite some pages. What's the best way to do that?
You're toast! Only if you really want to do it, make the changes and have duplicate content for who knows how long it takes for Google to dump the original URLs...since the original URL will still work.
