so i decided to finally start my own directory, a general one. i have read many articles and some of this forum's thread, but i sitll need some help. i know i should buy the package from http://www.phplinkdirectory.com but i don't know what u get. don't post me its features because i already read the whole thing. do u get you own domain name or do you have to register for one? and what about cpanel what is that about, also i dont get mysql. does any one have a guide or a tutorial on setting up one? thank you for all you help.
phpld is not hard to install. for serious business don't use useless domain to build web directory. please visit phpld forum, there is a pre-sale forum for newbies.
I would advise against starting a general directory. The niche is saturated IMO. You should look around before jumping into phpLD. There are many other directory scripts around that may suit you more. Of course you'll get a load of phpLD fans in this thread telling you it's the best, although many of them have never tried anything different. phpLD is a script. You will need to buy your own domain, web hosting and set it up yourself including a MySQL satabase if you want it to work. Installation is very simple. If you struggle the phpLD team will install it for a small fee. There's plenty of people on this forum like myself that can help you too, many will do it for free out of the kindness of their hearts
You will have to purchase your domain seperately, from a registrar like godaddy. You will need to also purchase hosting seperately, cpanel is just at your web host, if they have cpanel, it has the various features that you may want to use within your hosting account, like setting up email addys, create backups of your database, checking your stats etc, its all within cpanel. I dont "get" MySQL either but you dont need to understand it, the script takes the hard work out of that. If you post here or at their forum or look to see if they have threads already on installation it may help, its not difficult though.
For a general web directory you will need to purchase your domain and hosting. After that, get phpld(version 3) he will do the job for you. I have done the same and now its allready starting to get big. I have also find this: chris .instantspot.com/blog/2006/12/04/How-To-Install-phpLD-21 maybe this will help you out.
thanks for all comments, so now i think i should buy a directory that comes with everything like host info, scripts, template, and the registered domain name?
Go to a domain registrar like godaddy.com or namecheap.com. Look around for web hosting. Buy and download phpLD. Install phpLD. Done. Simple.
wow thx, that was pretty much all i need thx. do u recommend a web hoster from this forums? cuz i see a lot of people who do free web hosting.
Put me straight, just incase im getting confused, you dont think that a webhost can supply you hosting, a domain, phpld script and a theme all from the one place do you? You can get hosting and domain together, but the script, unless a script is offered free with hosting does not come as standard.
no a webhost just hosts the files you have right? so when u are using an FTP you upload your files to your host.. right?
ok thx, im going to try to make more money until i can afford to start a directory. any recommended keywords in the domain name like link, url, directory.ect?
Well i guess you could go for any of those keywords, its common to call them "something"directory but you may want to be different, often its suggested to keep domains shorter for any website, make the domain memorable. Domains with keywords are not essential. as long as the domain name makes sense i guess.
ok, again for the hosting do you anyone that can host the domain i will register shortly for free? it doesnt matter if its on this forum or not.
Dont go with free hosting. It's free for a reason. It will lack the quality that your directory requires.
ah ok good point, i was just going to start on a free one and work my way up, i dont have that much cash so im looking for the cheapest way.
Starting a directory on such a tight budget isn't a great idea. If you're going to try get things for free, hosting isn't one of the things that should be on your list.
