I bought some electronic equipment online about two weeks ago....I received it just last Monday when I plugged the equipment in it would not power on.
When I phoned the company a recorded message stated to email for service. I did that on Monday as well and I have yet to hear from them.

    What should I do?

I emailed them to setup an exchange. I purchased the item on a credit card. how long should I give the merchant to reply before taking further action?

If you have not heard from them, maybe you should call your credit card company and talk to them, you might want to reverse the payment.

Also depending what country you are in and purchased from you may have consumer laws regarding this (I only know NZ law).

    Good luck.

If you found them through another site such as Ebay or Amazon leave negative feedback on them. Even if you didn't find them through another site find out what sites their listed at and leave negative feedback wherever you can. If the item was expensive then you should definitely reverse the charges on your credit card.

First thing you should do is call the bank that issued your credit card. Explain to them that you received faulty equipment and the seller is not returning your emails or providing you with a contact telephone or service address...

    CHARGEBACK

That's the best thing to do. Your credit card issuer will explain what is required of you to complete a chargeback.

It would be prudent to call your credit card company and request a reversal of payment. Ask the vendor company who gave you the equipment to get it installed properly and then take the payment.

Thanks for the update and good luck. i would be interested to know how you get on with this, as what happens if it is still an answering machine and no response within the credit card companies timeframe? What would happen then?

I would repeat an email to see if possibly something occurred there and ensure that you simply didn't slip through the cracks. I would also look up domain name registration information. Sometimes small businesses have domains publicly registered to a phone number and address. You should give that a call if all else fails.

If there simply is no way of getting in contact with them, leave negative reviews on the places they advertise their products (ebay, pricewatch, etc.) and perhaps go to the level of reporting them to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) if they are US based.

Just providing an update...I havent heard from the company and I contacted credit card company to see if they had any new information..

they said they tried contacting the company but there is no response. They have another 30 days to respond or they automatically forfeit the chargeback.

Ok I got some bad news today. I called my credit card company (Citibank) just to find out that the merchants bank is not willing to provide a refund. Citibank informed me they will be reversing the chargeback. I was furious here I waited 60 days to be told this crap. I told them I was not going to stay like this and they stated they will be opening up an escalation. The bad part about it is that the merchant is hiding behind its bank and not responding to Citibank or myself but rather when the bank did the chargeback it appealed it. Anyone care to offer any advice?
