Hi, Trying to get my web directory sorted out, but would like some comments on the design of the website. http://www.purplepagesni.co.uk (can't insert live links yet) Very few of the links work atm, however, on the navigation in the main body, the EDUCATION section works. Any comments will be taken seriously. Cheers
Make the "(###) more" green like the arrow to clarify that they're together and increase the strength of your call to action. The colour change will also help to separate the link from the listing below it. Also, you could give more room to your listings area. It looks a bit crowded. Currently, your site width is around 915px. You could push it to 990px, which would allow you to make the middle section wider and still fit into a 1024x768 resolution. I hope that helps.
The first thing to do when you get problems like this is to validate your markup and CSS at W3C and follow the recommendations given. When you are 100% sure that your markup is corevt, then you can start looking at browser quirks. IE 5.x is the most troblesome! You shouldn't be using table background images. They never did work reliably and are now depreciated (I think). Instead, use a div with a background image and a foreground image for the overprinted text. You can just put the div inside the table cell if you aren't ready to do the whole thing with CSS.
Personally I would put a div around the whole site and create a sort of box with round corners then perhaps change the background colour outside the box to a light shade of grey. At the moment the site looks kind of "cold" and I think by adding this box it will make it "warmer". Not sure if that makes any sense to anyone else, but it does to me
create a background for your content. Your content's background should not be the same as the Sites background. The white just looks very dull and boring. Also, get a favicon and some nice tables to organize your data.
I would pad the category areas a bit more and expand the header to match the full width of the layout.
It's called "Purple Pages" but there isn't much purple on the pages, also the purple that is used is a bit "sickly" (Sorry that's the only description I could come up with!!) Maybe try for a nicer looking purple or a nice deep moody purple - Think of the purple on the Cadbury's Milk Tray box! Your page name includes a colour (purple) so I would think that colour needs to be a major part of the design? Just my 2 cents! Regards
