I just use one vertical skyscraper ad to the right of my site and a footer along the bottom. It all depends on your site layout really. Try not to use too many however as it just seems spammy and people are less likely to click them. Also worth noting that google don't let you disguis your ads as to lure people into clicking them so be careful of that.
