All you need to do is submit to the top 3 search engines, the remaining ones are just portals. If you can get into the top three then the remaining search engines will list them automatically. Hey you can search easily on Google. You can find a list of all seach engine like Alat vista Active Search Zoro lycos and others.
as I believe you need not to submit your site in SE. search engine submission is less important you concentrate to make other quality link building tricks for your site.
there is no need to add your site to search engines. quality content and building backlinks is the way to go. if your site will be noticed, they will link to your site naturally.
You are right buddy. Website that are crawled by google are indexed faster as compared to if you added URL manually to Google. I started my personal page and added link to google, it took 15-20 days to get indexed, while my blog which I didn't added to google automatically started appearing in search result just after 2-3 days.
I don't know all 500 directories but seven-directory.com/submit/ will submit your site to 140 search engines for free. Its a pretty neat tool
