I would not suggest raid0 either. Raid1 is just duplicated, not helping performance.
Raid 10 has 2 mirrors vs a single mirror in Raid5. Also, raid5 is slower than raid10 in writing. However, raid5 will give you more space. Raid10 always gets my vote.

For your current server, 80GB is really old. You might want to upgrade to new disks to have better performance.

Do you mean the space on them is not enough or can you just tell that it's not a newer, faster drive just because it's a smallish capacity?

When I visited your current vendor website, all the disks they list there are sata. 80GB sata has few years old already. You might want to ask your vendor exactly what kind of disk they are using for your server, if you don't know how to check

    My advice :

Take an unmanaged server (Webnx and Singlehop have the cheapest hardware) and, if you need it, go for a 3rd management company; I recommend rack911

Actually, right now we're considering just building our own server and going with colocation. I mean, our host wants a one time payment of $550 just to add another 2GB RAM. That seems crazy when you can build a nice server on newegg for 1000-1500. A friend recommended we build an Intel Core i7.

Also, an actual useful support guy from our host finally emailed me a week or so ago and said he took a look at our past logs and said our memory is bottlenecking us because our % memory swap used or whatever is too high. It does make sense since everytime our server load was high, our memory used was over 90 too. Right now we only have 2GB.

By the way, I don't know if you are aware of the latest offer of singlehop (only for new customers) :

    Intel Nehalem Core i7 920 2.66 GHz w/ 8 MB Cache
    12 GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB (7200 RPM) SATA Hard Drive
    5,000 GB Bandwidth

    $195/month (monthly)
    $169/month (quarterly - pay $507 every 3 months)

For new customers, which means it sounds like a promotion. What's the normal price of a package like that since I assume it won't always cost that much for the length we stay there?

I'm sure it's the normal price, as long as you stay with them.

Can you post or PM me a link to that promotion? I don't see it listed under their current servers on sale.

Media Temple doesn't have what we need.. and I am not paying $750 for their Nitro plan. SingleHop's promotion is really nice but reading reviews about them offsets that.. they apparently have a lot of network problems, lately at least, and they keep saying they're doing network upgrades to fix it.

Liquidweb is great for a dedicated server provider.

Singlehop is going to be great for the $$ once they finish their network maintenance hopefully on the 13th.
