    MariaDB is the new project to replace MySQL since Oracle has taken over ownership of that project.

    Postgresql is more powerfull than mySQL. i suggest it for you that want to build more bigger database than mySQL

    You can try HSQLDB (HyperSQL DataBase) This is the leading SQL relational database engine written in Java.
    Current version IS HyperSQL 2.2.9.

    Also, one of the latest Open Source DataBase that I would recommend is the MonetDB.
