    One of the best free way is to interact on Twitter with people who are interested in your niche. I use the search bar and type out keywords that interests me, and then just RT what people say or reply to them.

    I dropped $70 on Twiends as an experiment. So far, gained about 900 followers but: here's the catch, about 35-40% of what followers you disapears shortly after. Hard to say the sustainability of these followers long-term.

    I am using twiends at the same time you can also use other methods like placing your facebook and twitter accounts in your blogs or perhaps you can also put it in your profile in different forums your joining and you can also link up your Facebook and twitter at the same time...

    From twiends you can get followers. But not sure all those are humans. Most of them are bots, as they won't come to online to update their twitter page. They will run on autopilot system. Try to follow some members who are spreading your interests only. And before follow check that whether they are submitting their tweets from web or from other source. If they are submitting the tweets from web, then you can follow which will be useful to you. If not don't follow them. Its waste of time. Try to find human tweeters in twitter and follow them first.

    Have you tried lowering the allowed followers in your settings? You can chose to allow people with only low drop rates to follow you. Rather than the highest which is on by default.
