Far from being a mentor, I suggest you start with a VPS server. Learn some basic *nix . Learn control panels. How do you learn. Trial and error + reading. Hosting company come a dime a dozen. And some are dirt cheap. My best advice. Do not compete on price. Rather on offering and quality. Someone serious about their website, will be willing to pay a few dollars more to get more service.
I suggest you start with resell servers.you do not have to invest much money and you can gain a lot experience.
