Need KEI, R/S ratio guidance purrrrlease

I've heard contrasting suggestions when considering what limits to set yourself when researching R/S ratio and KEI on a keyword (One guide suggested KEI no lower than 10, and RS no higher than 1). I wondered what everyone here uses as a general rule of thumb, as I'm a bit confused with it. I know that you shouldn't just base your keywords on this, and should still take a look at your competition, but I just wondered if you could offer some guidance on the following:

    a) What number of daily searches does a keyword need to have for you personally to consider it?
    b) What number of competing pages is your threshold when researching a keyword?
    c) What KEI limit do you set for a keyword (e.g. no lower than 10)?
    d) What R/S limit do you set for a keyword (e.g. no higher than 1)?

Sorry for all the questions :)

    Hi,

I am in the process of trying to understand the keyword software I have purchased. I haven't had much luck interpreting these KEI and R/S values.

I bought Keyword Analyzer and am wondering if I should go back to my old keyword research, using google free keyword tool.

Very curious to know if anyone has an answer to this.

I have had success with just Google tool.

I can see the power of this tool, Keyword Analyser, but can anyone give tips on analyzing the data?

I want to bump this post because it is an important question.

I have also heard that one should use KEI>10. However, if willing to go down to 5 then you can get much more traffic at the expense of more competition.

So what do people think is the best KEI strategy to go for? Please share.

    Thanks

While KEI is a good measure of what you should go after, it is by no means a science and is not set in stone. The calculation has 3 variables and depending on the importance of these variables, you can even come up with your own KEI (after some thorough analysis of your website statistics) by adding some constants to the equation.

Wordtracker.com has its KEI defined as KEI = (P^2/C), i.e. KEI is the square of the popularity of the keyword and divided by its competitiveness. If you have great content and linking around a particular keyword and feel that you can beat the competition, you can reduce the importance of the variable C by multiplying the whole equation by a constant you come up with after your analysis. Likewise for the Popularity variable.

I usually come up with my own KEI based on the actual P and C values and the keyword in question. Here is a more thorough article about this by wordtracker.com.
