Agree with the above that you should go for quality really rather than quality, but it's good to mix it up a bit, do a blast to a load of directories every once in a while, but in between focus on building links properly and sourcing quality sites to get them from. If this is all you do then I doubt you would rank either highly, or consistently for a long period.
