You aren't going to have much luck finding images free for commercial use. I like to use www.istockphoto.com for my images. They are very inexpensive and have a large variety.

I agree, Stock Exchange is quite nice. It is free with request of use from the author.

GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH is best. No paying, no asking anyone for image.

Istockphoto is again good. I used to download image from there site and using photoshop used to remove the watermarks. In this way I could save some few bucks.

    deviantart is what I recommend.

A few caveats regarding Google's Image Search....it does just that, display images via their search engine you use....by entering specific keywords. Those images that eventually are displayed will belong to a variety of sources. Like many have mentioned, there are favorites, but when you click the links belonging to the images, those web sites will have a set of specific "usage rules".
Don't "swipe" images or you could be swiping copyrighted material. Nothing is actually free on the web unless the owners of those images are allowing it to be used for free. There is a web site I can refer anyone to called Cyber Trial Lawyer (I won't include hyperlink so as not to violate DP TOS)....but PM if you're interested and I'll send his link. He's very in-the-know on intellectual property laws and copyrights. I studied on this subject in order to protect my own material. But it would be a disservice not to be aware that everything online is:

#1. Copyrighted and initially owned by someone somewhere.
#2. The transfer of that specific image's copyright should be transferred to you
PRIOR to your using it (either for free of for an agreed usage fee)
#3. Using something without ANY permission only sets you up for a potential lawsuit.
#4. Don't forget, images can be traced by their file name doing a search on that name,
something knowingly used withou permission by owner can then pop up in
a set of search results and your URL could be in that list.

Just like doing a CopyScape on an article whereby the actual text will proves it's originality. You can probably fool some image owner online for a while, but then you eventually get found out....either through a backwards search, or via the owner's online friends, or worse yet, via the copyright owner.

Use certain search terms like "free" then the plus sign: + and the actual types of images you are curious to find. It really gets to be a science. Sorry for dragging this out so long . . . .

Check on Flickr if you don't want to spend even a dollar. Some photographers allow free use under certain conditions. But remember, when a photographer goes to the supermarket, he doesn't get food for free.
