Stick with your site content and product/services you are offering. Your keyword must represent the content of your site and things you are offering to visitors. To get started, make sure you optimize long tail keywords for some quick results. However, also optimize mid-competitive keywords of your niche as a long term strategy.
Depending on the type of website you operate, you want to target specific keywords for different purposes. For example, if you are running an affiliate website, you might consider targeting buyer keywords, as these searches usually represent the intention of buying something. Keyword selection is best done when considering the intetn of the searcher-try to put yourself in the searcher's shoes and think about what they are after when searching for that keyword. This might help your conversions. Also, not sure what your conversion rate is, but, I consider a good conversion rate in the 5% range-again, depends on the type of website you are operating.
