    what exactly do you need help with?
    for ads you could use the plugin called adsense deluxe or manually edit the theme files to ad in the ad code.

    he wanted firstly to know how to customise a templates size. He also wanted to know how to create an ad widget so he could move it around.

    No need for template size. Just mostly placement of ads and additional blogroll widget.
