How about guest blogging? I'm a big fan of this technique as all it costs is time. Write a useful and informative blog on the topic of your site and then approach blog owners and offer your content in return for a keyword rich link back to your site. This is mutually beneficial as the blog owner gets fresh unqiue and useful content and you get a link back. A good place to find blogs and connect with their owners is My Blog Guest. I'm apparently not allowed to post links in my posts by Google that and you should find it.
if you do not want to pay, then you have to work hard for it. your site is complete professional looking site. so you can get easily directory submitted. prepare a short description about your site, research perfect keyword (use google adowrds), Select Keyword matching Title of website. Now submit directories with this information. Create Social networking by Facebook page, Google+ page, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and post your features and offers there daily basis. Create social bookmarking in Digg, delicious, Stumbleupon, Tumblr etc. Comment on High PR do follow blogs. must be meaningful and do not spam. And of course, the only thing to add to the previous post is that you need to keep the content useful and fresh. But it does all take time. hell, if I had 8 days in a week instead of 7, I'd be rich!
You could do some submissions. Article, bookmarking, directories. There are lots of techniques you could use. Explore the net.

Your site is a travel site. So Just do some article creations based on travel and submit them to article directories. Also do directory submissions. have some link exchanges with other travel based sites with High PR. Also I suggest you to place more content on the main page with the keywords you target.

For your site i suggest do on page optimization and offpage optimization both. on page optimization like meta tag implementation, url optimization, image optimization etc off page optimization like directory submission, bookmarking, social media promotion, article submission, classified listing etc. if you do these your site must get good ranking on google plz use white hat seo process it will take time but never hurt your site.
I think as you have said that you don't want to pay for backlinking then it will be too hard for you to manage it. but start backlinking the site by different tools like forum posting, article submission, link wheel, pyramid linking etc.
I think you should do link exchange and article submission if you can't pay for the backlink, and of course, be patient!
Outsourcing can be a bit expensive, if you are willing to sacrifice time vs. money then I would do some guest blogging, article writing and forum marketing.
