Need Help With Question Regarding Shipping Charges

I have a rather general question regarding shipping. Being in the process of establishing a new ecommerce store drop shipping sporting goods, I am at a loss as to how to handle the shipping charges. Here are a couple considerations:

    · So many stores offer free shipping; however, while this would be possible with some small items, it would not be practical for other items which weigh several hundred pounds, such as baseball backstops, weight-lifting sets, etc.

    · I plan on selling only to the U.S. market; no international sales; Alaska and Hawaii are other question marks, as well.

Any constructive advice from those who have experience with this whole question would be greatly appreciated.

Much will depend on turnover, deals you get with courier companies and the number of product lines you'll have.

Because you're selling actual things, as opposed to drop-shipping, you may be in a position to actually price the cost of shipping.

For instance, if I sold hundreds of baseball backstops each year I would go online and enter in the dimensions and weight and get the price... or I could traipse down to my local post shop and get them to do it for me. Enter that into my e-commerce database and wait for the buyers.

If I had hundreds of lines and only sold a few each year that might be an onerous prospect.Let's say it was something specialised that got made to order by some 3d metal cutting process. I wouldn't want to have to have to make one to be able to get the shipping. Instead, I'd probably use the online calculator based on dimensions and allowing for packaging. That might be a big job initially but each time I added a new design to my site I'd add in the shipping info.
