captcha should work fine, if not use user moderation so they can't post till you allow it.

ascensions, even if phpBB3 is a newer version, it's still unstable. Plus, it's just a matter of time until it gets hit by spammers too.
sahmothers's solution takes away the interactivity of the forum by not working instantly for regular users.

Instead you can install a few MOD's that will help you prevent spam. I recommend Better Captcha combined with The Humanizer. Never failed so far ;)

PHPBB 3 has capcha built in.

While it's not stable, it's "more" stable then PHPBB2.....

My theory, is don't upgrade if nothing is wrong, but if you've got spam, don't go modifying an obsolete system.

I had lots of spam prior to upgrading, and haven't had a single piece since.

phpBB3 runs on our client sites without any glitches or instability. We haven't heard of any stability issues since RC1.

And the spambots target phpBB2, they haven't gotten around to phpBB3 yet but I'm sure there will be sooner or later.

    For phpBB2:
If you allow anonymous posts, install the drop-down anti-spam post confirm mod
There are plenty of great spam mods at phpbb.com
