I like phpbb, smf, and mybb. These are all good free forum software alternatives.

I've used both MyBB and SMF (and have written a couple of modules for MyBB, so I might be biased). I prefer the look of MyBB and how it works, both from the user viewpoint and the admin viewpoint.

You can use MyBB or PunBB for Forum. These are good open source forum scripts.

PunBB might be a bit short when looking for help and modules, MyBB is an alternative I am looking for for a project

MyBB is good, supported by pretty knowledgeable people and it has a very large base of people writing plugins. Still waiting to see what's in store for 2.0. That's probably going to be a lot of work for a lot of people, rewriting plugins and templates.

Maybe install a few different free ones on your localhost or a test site. PhpBB.com, MyBB.com and SimpleMachines.org are a few of the free ones. Use them all and then determine which one you like best :) A lot of folks will tell you which one they like but its better for you to try them all to see which one YOU like and then go with it :)
