A few days ago, I purchased a link directory site from a fellow DP’er that was looking to sell as they didn’t not have time to run and maintain the site. The site was originally using PHP Link Directory in the root directory but at the end of April, the previous owner moved it into /directory and used SocialWeb CMS as the directory script, changing the site to somewhat of a bookmarking site instead. The software was meant for news/blog stories but was converted into a fancy bookmarking directory. PHPLD is still fully operational and accepting links. Link Statistics for 2009 from database time stamps... PHPLD first number, SocialWeb second number: January, 1631, 0 February, 1324, 0 March, 1444, 0 April, 1991, 1 May, 525, 301 June, 54, 1181, July, 145, 1858 Total, 9000+, 3300+ = Over 12,300 Links Sign-ups in PHPLD went way down when it was switched into the /directory and replaced with SocialWeb as the root. Combined, site still maintaining 1500+ new links a month! Visits - only have what the seller provided for January to July (attached image). August 2nd and 3rd - according to Google Analytics, average 100 Visits a Day, 6:33 Minutes on Site, 31.20% Bounce Rate. -- Site is indexed in Google and other search engines. -- Site was not monetized previously. -- Domain is 1 Year, 10 Months Old. -- Google PageRank is Zero -- Alexa Rank is 131,573 Since I took over, I’ve changed some of the layout, put email address verification on SocialWeb (previously, it had no verification what so ever - not for links or addresses) and I manually verify all links. I cleaned up some of the code, made the URL structure a little cleaner and fixed a major “tags†glitch on SocialWeb. I put AdSense in the header only and in two days, made $0.83 first day, $0.00 the second day. I put a ClickBank Product on the sign up pages, no clicks yet - only been one day though. So my question is this... with approximately 100 Visits a Day (3,000 a Month) and roughly 1,500 new links a day - what is the next step(s)? Looking for ideas on how to improve the site, to increase the PageRank, increase traffic and tips on how to monetize the site... but I do NOT want the site covered in ads making the directory look cheap. Once I get the PageRank up, I’m thinking I could still keep the directory free but charge for featured and/or home page links to help the site pay for itself. Fire away guys! Good, Bad, Ugly... I’m listening!
