Need help -> Uploading a spreadsheet to shopping cart

Okay, I tried to make the title as relevant as possible. Here is my situation: I have a client who wants a custom shopping cart with a Wordpress framework, okay, seems easy enough. Now apparently, he has a spreadsheet (im guessing excel) of 5,000 items with descriptions, prices, photos, etc. that need to be uploaded to the database/shopping cart. My mind is blown, and I cannot think of an easy way to do this. Obviously manual submission is not an option, so there has to be a way... My skill with databases are limited, but I am competent enough to be able to follow instructions.

Any ideas on how to make my life/project easier?

I have to migrate random cart nonsense into Magento all the time. Its not too entirely vexing really.

Off the top of my head woo commerce(wordpress plugin) is typically the way to go. Not having used it much I would have to check a few things but essentially, you will want to take a look at this http://docs.woothemes.com/document/product-csv-import-suite/

hope that helps and feel free to ask questions.

Brilliant, thanks for the link Nigel! This is exactly what I was looking for. Is the initial woo commerce plug in free, and do you have to use it with a WooTheme?? I noticed the additional services are extra, which is no problem.

Yep, woocommerce in general is free http://www.woothemes.com/woocommerce/ you may require a commercial bolt on of some sort if you need something advanced. Sometimes you have to hammer on the template if its something normal but function wise it should work out of the gate.

You can also usually grab some pretty nifty stuff from themeforest for woo commerce that is fully mobile etc. Its sometimes easier to start with something like that.

http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress/ecommerce most of that stuff is woocommerce ready.

    Glad I could help,
    Nigel

Thanks again, I never realized there was such a following for eCommerce on Wordpress, maybe I will start moving in this direction with more of my clients.
