Need help understanding link building reporting results

I sell website builders, website traffic software, ebooks about this kind of stuff as well as text wetting and other similar products and books. When I check my backlinks I have seen hundreds of backlinks including coke, buy now and sites selling even more unrealizable products compared to what I sell. If I when to one of those sites would I actually find a link to my site or what.
Why would sites that don't even relate to my site want to link to me.

    Hi,

Question: I'm curious, with what, or where are you checking your backlinks?

Another Question: What is 'text wetting' *shrug* (text writing?)

These sites are the ones who just get syndicated material. Using RSS they get content on their site to display. Many sites do so. You cannot prevent this. And don't worry - this will not harm you - just increase your BLs.

Thanks for your reply. Now I understand what you meant ;) and what you're confused about regarding your backlinks.

What you did, actually, was perform a "link popularity check" on your domain. A link popularity, refers to the total number of links or "votes" that a search engine has found for your website. It wasn't actually showing you the other sites that link to you. It was showing you how many back links certain search engines recognize for your site.

What you saw, when you saw Coke, Buy Now, ect., was a sample from the tool that you used (at: http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/ ) of how you rank in general, with those other sites, as it pertains to popularity.

Since I'm not sure of your website's address, I'll use ours as an example, using http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/.

    Here are the returns:

I will replace the above STATS with a screen shot momentarily.

This is a link popularity check on one of our sites, whispy.com. See

20,460 = total back links recognized

467 = what Google, AOL, HotBot sees
(who only show a "sample" of your real backlinks by the way)

    12,325 = what MSN sees

    7,668 = what Yahoo! sees

So you see, you were not looking at the results from the correct standpoint is all ;) The links you see beside your site aren't other sites that have your link on theirs. Rather, it is showing you how you rank with your backlinks, according to other sites. Just like you're name ( and my personal motto) it's how we learn!

I hope this clears it up a bit for you. If you have any other question please do ask.

    Best,

    Lilly

Lilly, what you said makes a lot of since. Ok so if the backlink report is not sites linking to mine but how I am ranking if I see www.Macys.com 102,631 4,530 68,001 30,100 then My site is 102,631 4,530 68,001 30,100 ahead of my site in some kind of backlink.
No matter how you ansewre the previous question how can I tell if my link popularity is good or not. Is there a site were I can put in my domain name or inexpensive software I can get to determine this.? If it helps my site is http://webbusinesstoolsonline.com and as far as I can tell my pr is 6

Are you trying to compare your link popularity to competitive websites? If so you can use the same place that you already are. It offers some fields for you to put in a couple of competitors websites and then it will generate a link popularity report comparing your site and theirs.
I'm unsure where you are seeing your site as a PR 6. You seem to have a PR 2 for http://webbusinesstoolsonline.com, and no PR for http://www.webbusinesstoolsonline.com

This means that most of your backlinks (your links on other's sites) are pointing to http://webbusinesstoolsonline.com. Do you ever use your full url when reciprocal linking or just linking in general? Meaning do you ever include the www's?

How were you able to get the correct backlink rating in numbers?. You are not the first person to tell me my information is wrong and I need to be able know what is right about my page rank. Also I was just trying to find my link pop for my site not sites I compete with. If there is a better way to do this let meknow and let me know about were or how to get the right pr number.

Check your links here and here. Don't bother with any third party tools.
