Need help trying to figure out how to do CSS for my 1st site?

    Hi guys!
I've started working on my first website. I've been using Adobe's "Taking a Fireworks comp to a CSS-based layout in Dreamweaver" tutorial to help me get things started. I have my design that I like, but I'm having a problem adapting the tutorial to my actual site design, which is leaving me rather confused.

Here's my site; taaron.org It's rather basic, but I figured I'd do a cleaner/fancier version after I get this CSS thing figured out. The blue section is where I want my content displayed.

Do I make each CSS entry for each line? so it'd be something like
    Header
    trim/content/trim
    trim/activepage/blog gallerylinks/trim
    trim/project collection links/open space/trim
    trim/about links/ open space trim

Or would I do CSS for each element change? so there'd a CSS from the header, for the trim, for the active page, for the buttons, and so on?

Thanks for any assistance! I'm wishing CSS was covered in my Animation & Web Design course in college, cause it's just leaving me  now.
