Hi Guys, first post, so here goes.We need help setting up a web server for our business. Currently we are hosted at RackSpace and paying about $800 a month. The plan is to ditch them and host everything ourselves. We are getting setup with a Verizon Fios Business account that comes with a Static IP and 35/35 Download and Upload speed and plan to purchase the server box. Beyond that we need help.I'm not sure if we should be in a Windows environment or Linux. We want to host our own email server for 5-10 employees and serve up our website that will get 500-1000 hits a day. We currently run our ECommerce software with Rackspace and it requires PHP and a SSL certificate. For the $50 more then we are paying now for Fios Residential we figured it was worth a shot to try and save $750 a month.Of coarse we do not expect someone to help up for nothing and more then willing to pay a fair rate to the willing expert qualified. I guess it would be a remote desktop situation once we get the right operating system installed. Thanks to those who may respond. Jim
Rackspace is notoriously overpriced. From the sounds of it, you're going to have a whole lot of configuring to do if you set it up in-house. And unless you get little to no traffic, your verizon account just won't cut it. Your "Hits" measurement is useless when trying to plan this out. Serving one page could generate 1 hit or 1,000. I highly recommend getting either a VPS or a dedicated server from LiquidWeb. A fully upgradable dedicated server that can easily handle what you want to do should cost less than $250 per month. A VPS should cost less than $80 per month. The servers already have everything you need. CentOS - OS CPanel / WHM - Control Panel Apache - Web Server Exim - Mail Server MySql - Database Server DNS - IP Table system Way more speed than you can get from Verizon Antivirus system Antispam system Open Source software packages Router Switch Redundant power system Server Backup System 24/7 Tech Support Are you sure yo want to do this in-house?
Thanks for the referral, yes I'm sure I want to do this, 35 MB Upload seems like a lot to me and its not like we are running media server. I figure its worth a shot and I like the idea of having full control rather then limitations. Of coarse we wont simply Axe what we have until the new system proves out. Worse case, we have a nice Server to use for other purposes. Thanks a lot!
You dont need much to run a website in-house. Hardest thing in my opinion is setting up the email server part of it. 35mbps upload will be plenty for a site not getting more then 1,000 hits a day. Checkout Ubuntu as your server environment, there are several online walk throughs on how to setup the web server stuff. http://connectwww.com/how-to-install-and-configure-apachephpmysql-and-phpmyadmin-on-ubuntu/727/
