Need help installing phpld v2

    Somebody please help me. I read on here on how easy it is to start a directory. I bought a domain and hosting and that went smoothly. Then I tried to install phpldv2. I uploaded the zip, extracted it , and completed the first step changing file permissions to 777. When the next step says access the installer by trying to go to the directory. I read this as you should go to the domain. When I try that I get a 403 and 404. Is this a problem with the install or the host?

    Its easy... upload the script then change permission of folder temp to 777 and create three more folders within temp namely - adodb, cache and templates and chmod them too to 777 . Also chmod the include/config.php file to 777.

    After this just point your browser to the root directory where you have uploaded phpLD and the installer will start.

    Remember while uploading, all your files must be uploaded to the root directory means the www directory. I think you uploaded to some sub folder. Like www/phpLD/ . Are you sure all the files and folders for script is in the www directory.. or u missed some of the above steps. ???

    yes that is wrong...

    you uploaded to the folder phpLD... it means that all the core files now lie in the www/phpLD/ so thats a mistake.

    You can do this now.

    Open FTP and delete the folder phpLD on your server. Now upload all the script files to the www folder itself. Just make sure that all the files which you got with phpLD lie in the www folder only

    How can I do if I want to run the directory under a sub folder or sub domain? Under this case, shall we still upload the file to root folder?

    You'll need to create the folder or subdomain first, then upload the directory script to that.

    The Read Me File...

    /*******************************************
    How to install PHP Link Directory
    @link http://www.phplinkdirectory.com
    ********************************************/

    Please read the README first.

    /*******************************************/

    Upload the files in the archive to your host.
    Change permissions on the following file and four folders to 777
    include/config.php
    temp/
    temp/adodb
    temp/cache
    temp/templates
    If the folders do not exist please create them.
    Note: The temp folder does not have the folder names: adodb,cache,templates within the "temp" folder. As it says "If the folders do not exist please create them"

    Access the Installer by trying to go to the directory.
    It should forward you to /install/, if it doesn't try
    typing in the url directly.
    For example, if I installed the directory in a sub folder
    of my domain it may look like this.
    http://www.ap0s7le.com/directory/install/ <---------

    Run through the self explained setup, if you have any questions,
    comments or suggestions stop by the forum.

    Thank you for choosing PHP Link Directory

    Kind Regards

    I just paid someone to install it for me. All the people who said this was easy for a person who has no experience to use were liars. Now that it is installed I still have no idea how to do anything with it. If I have to pay someone for every step of the way it is going to get very expensive quick.

    go to the cpanel.. yourdomain.com/admin/

    Go through the different drop down sections at the top and modify settings. Then you'll need to go to categories and create a category structure.

    The system is pretty easy to control.. if your able to do basic html ft etc. you shouldn't have any problem templating it either. If you can't do basic ftp uploading maybe you need to take a class before trying to be a webmaster.

    Are you talking about directory, emailer, system, and logout? The only thing I can figure out how to do with that is add catergories but I want to use a dump and don't understand the directions I am seeing for doing that with what I see and I want to change the template but I don't see how to do that.

    Why don't you just go to the different menu sections and see whats in them.. Then you can see what each part does and get a feel for what you can do with the system.

    Honestly I have no idea how to do a dump, likely you'll need to access your mysql directory through php my admin for that (in your server cpanel you have access to this, likely yourdomain.com/cpanel). I recommend creating your own directory category structure so you don't have the same structure as hundreds of other directories. Its much better to create your own unique content through creating the categories.

    You may want to read instructions in the template's read me. If your template doesn't come with a read me try a different one. Generally you'll just need to ftp some files into the correct folders and its done.

    right now I've decided just to manually add the categories and I'll change the template after that.

    Well he wanted to install in root but has installed in a subdirectory so had a problem. He couls have still installed the directory but it would not be accessible at www.domain.com ... it would be installed at www.domain.com/phpLD.

    Well u should atleast know how to upload scripts, use cpanel , FTP, create databases, change permissions and all kinds of stuff. These things are essential for installing / using any script.

    Actually it seems that u got irritated by a small problem and hired someone. Actually it was very simple :p

    It didn't cost a lot. I still don't understand how to upload things but I'm first getting myself comfortable using the script and getting everything setup. The actually using it part is real simple.
