Hi, me and my friend are trying to create an anime download site and we have run into a bit of a problem, finding a good host. I've searched tons of sites but they all seem to have very high prices for extra hard drive space, I don't really understand it because just a few weeks ago I payed 80 USD for 500 gig sata drive for my home pc lol. Anyways we're looking for a host that has good bandwidth and nice hdd space, we're talking about hosting a lot of anime series so it will take a lot of space but we also are on a budget. We're thinking anything below 200 dollars a month, the lower the better. Any help from you pro's would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
I think it is a good idea to get powerful VPS account or a cheap dedicated server. I think VPS is definitely better and would save you significant amount of money on annual basis. Good VPS will cost you from $20 to $80 per month (Unmanaged). Reliable dedicated hosting on Core 2 Duo based server goes more than $120/month.
I agree with fcolor. For that amount of money you can find good VPS or a dedicated server on which you will have the whole hdd space for your site.
I will give you an idea (something that I use very much). Use a mixed combination between a dedicated server and shared hosting. Here is the comparison _______________ CPU_____HDD_____Traffic Shared hosting____low_____ big_____lot Dedicated server__high_____low_____low Face it - a $9.95 hosting gives you 170GB storage and 2000GB traffic. Buy 10 hosting plans and see what you get for under $100 dollars eh? Here is the catch - if you host a big website (that utilizes so much space and bw) it will usually make a big load and the shared hosting will ban you immediately. Here comes the dedicated server - host all of your .php, website files and database on the dedicated server and use the shared hosting as storage of your big files. Couple of hundred hits for downloads of big files cannot do a big load right That way your shared host can never claim that you are overloading the server (search for host with usage statistics visible in CP!) and you can utilize all their "fake" advertisments in full! It's cheap, it's practical, it's harder to implement... Why not?
I want to say thank you to all of you!! especially you wattie, you just drop some really good advice in my lap and have completely changed my mind on how i'm going to go about setting this up, I have one question though. Instead of getting the dedicated server to actually host the website, couldn't i just get one of those cheap website hosting plan that cost like 10 dollars a month? and host the website on that. Now I just need to find a place to get vps from with deals as good as the ones in your example haha. Man you guys are smart, so glad I found this place. =)
yes, VPS is the way to go, just make sure you get lots of bandwidth because you are going to need it. I think godaddy would be one good place to get started. Good luck!
Well I was thinking atleast 1500GB a month and 500 gig+ hdd space. If I could do like wattie said and buy multiple cheaper plans that would work too. For example 100 gig hdd and 1000+ gig bandwidth a month, I'd be happy to find something like that for a really good price and just buy more than one.
I have been using future hosting with a managed VPS plan for about a year and a half. No real complaints or problems. The cost is $65 for 832 megs of memory, 40 gigs hard drive space on quad core dual processor servers. With the service I get with futurhosting, I am happy.
checl link on my signature ,they offer unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space for only 6.95$/month
Well for unmanaged hosting you can get : 46 euros => 3GB Ram, 100mbs connection, 500gb hard drive that's the best I found anyway.
