Need help adding the first domain to my dedicated server

    Hi,

I've just bought a dedicated server. I now want to add a domain so that I can access the server using the domain rather than the IP Address.

How can I set up the server, and the nameservers?

I've got the domain hosted with GoDaddy. I'll be wanting to add multiple domains to this server, so each domain needs to go to a differant directory.

I've searched around so much and haven't found a simple step by step guide.

I have SSH access and full access to change any setting I need.

    PLEASE Help me!!

    Thanks
    -Luke

Do you have any control panel on that server?

    Hello TheDreamLab,

As you had opted a Dedicated server for your website, I will suggest and recommend you to get a control panel (cPanel/WHM) through which you will be able to create unlimited domains, databases, email accounts, and various features for easy management and administration of your accounts.

Please contact me in case you have any questions.

    Thank you.

Then it's more complicated, especially when you don't know how to manage your server.

I assume you have installed Apache on your server. Then you will need to read about virtual host, how to edit Apache config to add more domains, which are sharing one IP.

If you want to create DNS, you will need to have a DNS server on it. It's really not an easy work, by writing in 1 or 2 sentences. As suggested, if you have a control panel, it's much easier to create accounts, manage DNS. Saying that, you will still need to learn about server management, otherwise, you can mess up your server, and it can lead to a dead one.

If this server is for your business, I would suggest you are using a managed server. If you just want to play with it, a vps should be better. In case you mess up the vps, you can reload OS for free, meanwhile you have to pay fee for technical staff in datacenter doing that, with dedicated server.
