    Hello everyone,

I’ve just registered to this site, i hope i’m in the right section
Also, pardon my English, I’m French after all

I’m currently developing an on-line computer game, I don’t want to disclose too much of the product, let’s just say it’s a kind of treasure hunt, players have to pay to participate and the winner takes all (minus my commission )

I’m not looking for comments about the idea in itself (though I’m sure they’d be valuable), but for information about advertising

I’m currently working on my business plan, and I have loads of questions about advertising costs and strategies

Let’s say i need 50.000 people playing once every month to start making money

I have no idea of the amount (and the time) necessary to reach that level

What is the best strategy, advertise specifically on on-line gaming websites or on the contrary, target main stream websites?

Should I advertise on a CPC or CPM basis? Or mix both?

If it’s on a CPA basis, if a customer registers to my web site but doesn’t make a deposit and doesn’t effectively plays, what would that cost me?
What would be the CPA if he registers and plays?

Generally, how much are CPC and CPM?

What about viral advertising? Is that “self made” or do advertising companies take that in charge? What does it cost?

    What about affiliation?

As you can see (and though I know my product and my market well), i’m week when it comes to web advertising…:

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    thanks very much in advance

You may just want to browse around, maybe google some stuff, to see the different rates. Best of luck!

    Au revoir.

Depending on what stage in your development you are and if you're comfortable, the best thing to do would be to seek out other sites and businesses already doing what you're proposing to do to some extent, and see what lessons learned they might be willing to share.

Mixing up your advertising, in small amounts, when you start out will give you a better feel for which strategy will produce the best ROI.

    Bonjour jpr2!,

Youtube is a great way to promote a new video game, just create videos showcasing the game and release them on youtube, it's free and rather effective. Anyways, bonne chance avec ton site!

That's a great idea. Make multiple videos that would contain your link in the video and in the description as well.

I guess since you're advertising a game, the best thing is to spend some money and get some really good banner designs after which you should go for CPM advertising. When it's a game, you'd have to spend a fortune on people coming just to check out the graphics and stuff and then leave within the next 10 secs.

I might be a good idea to Google similar products and try to 'reverse engineer' their marketing strategy by looking at their sites and promotions. You can probably find them using a keyword search.

use the same strategie like online poker does. Freerolls - Qualification for monthly final games with high prices and so on.

    - Press promotions for some high paying games (free enter)... and also about the event (winner interview, you tube ...)

    - Use credit card verification (make sure you can convert the free players in paying customers)

    - Make a special game where the "buy in" is a "tell a friend email" ... viral.

    - Invest in the price money and not to much in advertsing. Use affiliates for that :)

join on online games forum and let them know about your software although might not boost your advertising immediately but it will pay off later...

Advertise on gaming sites and gaming forums. Try to do paid advertising on poker forums, as that's a demographic that's most related to gambling online for money.

Better yet, PM me when your site is ready -- I run a site called Cashgamers.net (see sig), and it features sites that pay players cash prizes for tournaments/games. You'd be a perfect fit on my site...let me know if you'd be interested.
