Hi ive been making affiliate sites for a year or so and not doing the best really, but think im getting the idea - either way it has kept me occupied so that is a good thing! I bought a domain a few months ago for my local town, never really considered what to actually do other than offer local information, things happening etc, not monetised it. Anyway it is now ranking in first page for words such as '(local town) jobs' or market, or shopping etc. Getting a few hundred visitors per month at the minute so nothing to write home about but progressing ok. Im thinking that this may be worth something to someone, but not a clue what to do with it. Eg if i were a builder in my town, and my site ranks on front page for some phrases, would it be feasable to try and sell advertising space? what would be a realistic amount of visitors before i should even consider doing this? I think i could easily increase traffic at least to a few thousand a month by just aiming for certain phrases like accomodation or hotels etc, but is it even worth it? Any pointers, thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated!! Kind regards Alan
Could you pm me the URL? i could give you some ideas. let me check it out also PM me what you rank high for in google
Targeting content such as articles and presentations for your town can expand the details of it and give you more traffic, along with opportunities for affiliate programs and advertising space to make money from the traffic. You have to decide whether ads or affiliate programs are better for your traffic.
Start by find what keywords you're ranking for exactly. You can choose to sell ad space, generate leads and sell them, or rent the site to a business owner for a few $100 a month, or flip it. It's going to really depend on what your site looks like, who it caters to, and how reliable the traffic is.
If you're ranking on the first page for a local search, you might try turning it into a job listings site. If I were doing this, I'd start off by allowing businesses to list their jobs for free (with moderated approval, of course). You might look at other sites to find out what you would need to require (such as resumes, job experience, etc.) in order to make your site useable. Once you have a good amount of traffic, you could provide paid guides on writing resumes, submitting applications in a certain field, etc. or you could make businesses pay for advertising space on a prime location on your page.
Hi thanks for the reply, all sounds interesting yes, never considered that option! I did consider trying to rank for the jobs keyword, and am going to do this. But my train of thought was possibly to approach employment agencies who pay for their advertising already. If i were to approach an agency and say 'well google it and there i am' it might be of some value to someone. But honestly what value, not a clue. Hence asking here to see if anyone had any idea! With regard to local businesses on there advertising their vacancies, how would that work for example? I will and am gladly putting businesses on there for free as it will make my site more complete, but from actually getting the content on, getting it all working and adding links to places, and probably the visitors increasing as i did this, well then id be lost!!!!! I shall do all of this first and try not to jump the gun so to speak, but do people think it has potential? any other ideas or routes to consider? practical approaches? Or should i treat it as a hobby and focus more on other projects? Many thanks for any thoughts Alan
