Need experienced advice on growing a unique site

    Hi all,

I've kind of hit a wall with my site at this point and am looking for advice from experienced site builders. My current project is http://www.gamescreenie.com which is a video game image resource primarily aimed at webmasters. I have spent a lot of time coordinating the building of the site and then uploading thousands of images and planning future expansions on the idea. Unfortunately I do not know where to go with generating more traffic for the site.

Currently i receive anywhere from 10 to 30 uniques a day and average about 4 page views per visitor. Considering I aim primarily at webmasters I have done a few posts on GamesPress and VGamin about the site and that has generated most of my daily users. I have also directly emailed about 50 staff members of various game sites and that has also garnered a good response.

Future plans hold a subscription service in the future. What I am looking to do now is drive massive traffic to the site so that more webmasters will stumble onto the resource and bookmark it. As that gets under way the webmaster specific tools (zip downloading, image requesting) will move to being only available to members.

With all that background out of the way ;) what do I do now? I am working on some more link exchanges but I am choosing carefully as this is meant to be a professional site. Also, I have 357 indexed pages in Google, how do I increase their ranking to gather search engine users to the site? A week ago one of the galleries hit the front page for its respective title and brought me 500 visitors a day for two days. I want more of that!

I like to build ideas but I have a very hard time marketing them as I don't know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am willing to learn my way around (or over) these obstacles.

    Look forward to your replies!

Well, since you are just starting - perhaps you should get rid of the ads (in the beginning). Besides that, here's some ideas:

    - check out www.indiegamer.com - it's a game dev forums from where you might find some users
    - write in one sentence "what your site is all about and how can I (the reader) benefit from it". Now as I go to your site, I couldn't tell that it was for webmasters or journalists since it says "social news site for gamers" (with link to some other site)

Thanks guys! I added the site description and ditched the ads except the skyscraper which is going to be a banner ad for another game site soon. The description was thrown up today and will be shortened and refined soon.

Any more helps or ideas to get things moving?

Well, what bugs me most is this line:

It's like the moment I arrive to your site, I'm told to go away :)

I'd put that line in the site footer, and put something like "gamescreenie - image resource for journalists/reviewers" what not there...

Then I'd check out some traffic tips and work hard every day ;)

that actually seems like a great idea! you could go through all the normal seo work. mabe a little more written content on the home page and you should use seperate title and description tags for each topic like the ps3 section should say somthing about ps3 not just the same thing for each page in the title and desrip tag. also having your domain name in the title is pretty much pointless you couldput more relevant search terms there instead. that should help individual sections of the site gain higher positions in the serps. also instead of the domain saying http://www.gamescreenie.com/gallery.php?section=24
it would be better seo to have it say http://www.gamescreenie.com/ps2page1 or somthing.
and remember that in terms of search engine traffic content is king so having a little text about the section is key. maybe even a good amount of text :) and just keep on keeping on.... submit to directorys engage in more forum activity use deep linking techniques write articles press realeses and check out answers.yahoo.com theres always someone looking for somthing. and the best part of that is if that page ends up in google there is your link for someone else to find. hope that all helps and good luck with a great idea.

OK guys I've implemented some more of your advice. I have done some SEO optimization. Each gallery page now dynamically updates the description and keyword meta tags for the specific gallery. Proper permalinks are also being worked on now. I have also ditched all the ads and moved the link that GameProducer was talking about to the sidebar. In its place I have added a little blurb about the site.

So what do you guys think? Any other areas to work on right now?
Thanks for your help so far!
