    PHPlist is an opensource app that you can load on your server and customize. http://www.phplist.com

    Main chimp is a hosted solution that offers very impressive features, even in the free version (Free package offers 1,000 subscribers and 6,000 emails a month)

    I have used both on for clients and would recommend Mailchimp

    I am also recommend Mailchimp which is free and powerful.
