Need advise: How much should I charge?

I have not designed website other than my own for a couple of years now. Recently, I designed one for a relative who was left high and dry by his designer. He requested me to help and I stepped in. Now he insists that our company should charge him for the work done.

The problem is that we are not sure about the current rates in web designing. How much should we charge for the website design (7 pages of hand coded, table-less, valid CSS, .html pages)?

The pages included both two column and three column designs, and several stock images.

I would really appreciate your insight on this.

It depends on lot of things, mainly with the quality of work. If you would post the link here, it would be easy to suggest.

if its family charge them $250.

its probably worth a lot more, but usually people who aren't in the web space think all web work is overpriced.

They will probably look at $250 as fair.

Just try to be fair. Its hard to put a price on something we haven't seen. How about that link?

What were they going to pay the other designer? Take a percentage of that and ask if you can use them as a reference for more work.

if you werent going to charge in the first place, he will probably be shocked when you ask for money (even though he said for you to do so) id just ask for $50 take him for lunch and maybe get more paid work out of him

Well I think you need to post it for sale or for bidding... it is difficult to price customized design.. it depends on buyers choice.

    Hello guys,

thank you so much for the responses and your advise. I was out of town, so could not follow up on the thread. You can see a copy of the site over here.

Apart from this, I have developed 3 custom designs for the contact form, including one where the form fields change color when a user forgets to fill a field. Plus 3 different images for the mantle.

They would also like me to install a blog with a design matching their site.

Thank you once again for the advise.

If it was just you and the work stopped after the first design round I would say he should take you to a nice dinner for you and your significant other. But since he wants more work done a rate of $25/hr isn't bad for family, I would think that's about half price of what you should charge a stranger.

Website looks good $250-300 sounds about right if he is a business customer, just make sure you have a "designed by" link.

    @mytvtalk

I already did that :) The problem is that he is not very familiar with the web design backend, and is not sure what he thinks it is worth, is actually the correct amount. So he keeps insisting that I ask for a sum. I would have been happy to do it for free, really... but it is one of the things you have to deal with when working for righteous people, I guess.

It's fairly close to half of the average. To be specific, the average hourly rate I've seen so far is $64 with a standard deviation of $9.70, so it's a little more than one sigma below half.

That's the average for someone with about 9 years of experience and a bachelor's degree, though. YMMV.
