Need Advice With New Hard Drive

I'm having a few computer issues and I have some questions that I would really appreciate if you guys could answer, since I'm not that knowledgeable about partitions, images, and such. Well it's more like stuff I hope you guys can tell me if I'm right or not.

First of all, my computer occasionally makes a sound like "WHACK!", which I assume is the head smacking against the side of the hard drive. I'm guessing that this means that I am going to need a new hd in the near future. Am I good so far?

If so, I guess I have to get a new HD. I found this program ( http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm ) that I think would work for copying all my information. Would this do the trick?

Am I missing anything, or is there anything that you guys would advise me to do?

Buy a new one. You don't have to wait before your hard drive crashes.. Back it up now or you could burn your files.

Buy a new hard disk and copy your data simply on the new one. Then you don't have to worry about the images and all that. they are required if your drive gets crashed..!!

Well I know that. I was just hoping for some input about that program. I mean, will that copy all my data from one to the other?

    What type of harddrive?

If its an external I can give you a few suggestions to fix your problem. Im sure I can help you fix it. Worst case scenario you might have to freeze your HD or even purchase a new one.

    Internal? I can still help.

Ok I've figured out all I need to know except don't I need to create a partition and format it before I transfer my data? I know how to do this, but just making sure.

You should use this opportunity to make DVD backups while you're at it.

I love the WD 640Gb drives. Extremely fast and pretty quiet. Pretty cheap now too. I've always used programs like ghost to switch drives.
