Hey All, I have a need for hosting space for which I feel compelled to buy own server as existing service provider is not able to meet the bandwidth and other quality requirements. Let me admit, i am naive about server requirements. I think, should buy a server for me and sell out rest of the space. What should be the general precautions exercised or quality of service asked for before buying a server? If any body could guide me.or tell about a specific server provider.., would be great
I use Site5.com .. great service, fast server, never had any problems ! the bad thing is that it might be a little more expensive than average !
You should try going to a company that wants to get rid of an old server. You might be able to get it at a cheaper price i suppose.
You might want to think real hard about the responsibility and legal obligations you take on when you host sites for others. Reading posts at DP it is easy to see that many hosting customers are VERY demanding. They expect 100% uptime, instant service, and don't want to pay anything for it. Not a business model that seems attractive to me
Hosting normally is more of a pain in the ass then a profit unless you have admins to run it for you and have access to large money making accounts. I know I am very demanding on my host but online is where I make my living, its how I feed my kids so uptime and quick service are A MUST!!
You could always try a VPS to start out with. www.powervps.com is a great company that has terriffic service. The servers are 100% managed, so if you ever need anything done, just put in a ticket and it gets done. Tickets are usually replied to within 15 to 30 minutes.
I have been with Servstra.com and have been very impressed with their quality and support. Managed servers though, so if you are not looking for something managed it might not be for you.
