Looking into opening a server uptime business that has a very distinctive twist. When looking at my hardware requirements, it seems I'll need different server monitoring locations from which to check a site.

    1. how does this work - you mean if I ping a server from Texas it may work but if I ping it from Paris, France it may not?
    2. need your speculation. One of the top uptime services - how many server locations do you think they have, or someone would need to provide a good product globally
    3. what would be the minimum of server locations globally to provide a reasonably accurate service?

    1. Yes, there could be networking problems and some routes could also be slower, so that data can also be given to the users (the speed at which their servers can be accessed). It also ensures that if one datacenter (eg. your usa one) goes out for some reason your services are still up.

    2. A lot, but you should start with a few then just get more when you need. Any good host can get your more set up in 24 or 48 hours.

    3. I would say 3, but it can vary a lot.

    Hello,
It depends what transit providers are in use. You can look at the carriers at http://www.internetpulse.com/.

I'd say 6, approximately 2 from the US, 2 from Europe and 2 across asia - at minimum. Take a look at Pingdom, we use them, fantastic service.

You may need to isolate the carrier having the issue. If there is a major error with Level3, and (say) both US servers solely use them as their transit provider (unlikely, though), then you could return false negatives.

Sorry about all your questions being "1." :)

    Thanks,
