I'm trying to help my buddy get the info he needs to get an ecommerce site up and running. He's not a very technical user, so he doesn't really know anything about how to do it himself. The way his site will work is like this: His business contacts dump their inventory listings on the site People can browse and purchase from these items When someone places an order, the order goes to the business who listed that item, but the payment goes through my friend. What kind of software can manage this? And also, he will probably need someone to design this site for him, because like I said, he's not really capable of it himself. Anyone have any good suggestions for that?
The best ecommerce sites for out of the box needs are prestashop and magento. http://www.prestashop.com/ http://www.magentocommerce.com/ They have REALLY good features - easy setup, and not much he would need to do other than picking a nice theme/layout and uploading the content (products) To get products from his business owners onto his site, (i think) you can call multple databases into the premade php files. I could be wrong and I am sure someone else would chime in if I am. If he was to download magenta or prestshop, there isnt much he needs. just a website and database... he can get that from godaddy...unless he can host his own.
I have never used Prestashop but I can certainly vouch for magento Awesome software, very advanced for an opensource.

As you will be needed little customization on any software you will use. I would recommend to use oscommerce or zencart because you will find developer easily at low cost.
Your friend may want to process the orders himself. By this I mean when he gets an order, he then places this order with the 3rd party vendor that listed the product using the shipping information that the Buyer supplied. So he pays the vendor from the money from the sale. It is no different than drop shipping. Most times in retail you want to view the orders before processing anyway. I know that Every Day someone tries to scam me one way or another. I couldn't tell you how many stolen credit cards I have reported. And only 1 time ever has any gotten by me. If it looks suspicious then it gets investigated or denied. Good luck
